They kept a casual eye on the fish market from across the street. Even though Bill had wanted Isaac almost as long as he’d known the man, now that he knew what it was like to go to bed with him…well, his presence at Bill’s elbow was twice as distracting as it had been before.

It seemed forever rather than just a few hours before the market closed for the day. Before long the various workers would be leaving. Including Young and his compatriot.

Likely the men would go to a saloon. If so, Bill and Isaac would have to wait outside, lest either man recognize them. If Young went back to wherever he called home afterward, how long would they spend surveying the place, instead of getting back to their own bed?

A damn shame they couldn’t trust the other MWP officers enough to bring someone else in to help. But there had been too much betrayal already on that front to risk it. As for the regular police, given the Dangerous Familiars Squad’s activities, Bill had the sinking feeling their chief was in Pemberton’s pocket outright.

A crowd of workers exited the market, laughing and talking amongst themselves. In their midst were Young and his friend. But while the other men turned toward the city and away from the waterfront in a group, the two hung back until they were left behind. Walking shoulder-to-shoulder, they continued on along South Street, paralleling the wharf.

Finally.

“Come on,” Isaac murmured.

Bill and Isaac followed at as slow a pace as possible, while still keeping the two in sight. The docks never truly slept, and there was still enough activity to prevent Bill and Isaac from standing out, should the men happen to look back. The sun crept down toward the horizon as the heat gripping the city began to ease.

The crowd thinned out as they began to approach one of the sanitation department’s dumping wharves. The area along the wharf was largely empty, to allow carts filled with debris to back up to the river’s edge. The contents would be dumped onto a waiting barge, then taken away to be used as infill or disposed of in the ocean. By this time of day, though, all of the city workers who drove the carts had gone home, and no barge bobbed in the river alongside.

While Young and his compatriot walked out onto the empty wharf, Isaac darted behind an empty guard shack. Moving as silently as he could, Bill joined him. He pressed his back flat against the weathered boards, then risked a peek around the corner.

The two men had come to a halt at the water’s edge. In the relative quiet of the deserted wharf, their voices carried.

“This is your fault,” said the one. “If you hadn’t gotten caught—”

“How was I to know the coppers had beaten us there?” Young shot back.

“If you hadn’t insisted on stopping for a pint on the way to the boat, you might have gotten there before them. Then we wouldn’t be in this mess.
